Little Drummer Boy (Tab)

$

To give you an idea of the tabs in the Christmas Ukulele III ebook, here’s an arrangement in the same styles and with a similar difficulty.

The Little Drummer Boy is (supposed to be) based on an old Czech folk melody. But it only became well known when rearranged and given lyrics in the 1950s for the Harry Simeone Chorale version.

Full Arrangement

Little Drummer Boy (Tab)

This arrangement is designed to be played solo. It can all be played with your thumb on your picking hand. When you play more than one string just strum your thumb down until you hit the last note in the chord.

The notes in brackets here are backing notes. They’re not part of the melody so play them softly.

Melody Arrangement

Little Drummer Boy (Melody Tab)

This version is even simpler. It splits up the chords and the melody into different parts. So you can play this version with a friend or with this MP3. It’s stereo split so you can play along with either the chords or the melody.

Melody Version

For the strumming here I’m just doing two down strums per bar.

Tripping Lily – Santa Will Find You

Tripping Lily’s ukulele cover of Mindy Smith’s Santa Will Find You has been the video to kick off every Christmas UkeTube since 2009. The song has the perfect mix of melancholy and jazziness for a Christmas song. And Tripping Lily played it so well. So it’s well past time I wrote it up.

Suggested Strumming

Two main strums will get you through this. Both of them just down strums.

For the more sparse parts you can just do two down strums per bar.

For the other parts you can do six down strums with the fourth being emphasised. Like this:

d d d D d d

In the verse and intro: Once each on E and Emaj7. Twice on everything else.

In the chorus: The first two lines the same as the verse. The last two strum the pattern once for each chord.

Here’s how that strum sounds:

Here’s the guitar line in the intro and throughout adapted for ukulele:

There’s a slight change right at the end. In the outro section replace the last two bars with this:

Bruce Miller – Frasier Theme (Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs) (Tab)

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard this tune. Several hundred I expect. But not once did it occur to me that there might be a reason he’s going on about tossed salads and scrambled eggs. Frasier writer, Ken Levine asked the tune’s composer Bruce Miller who explained, “these were things that were “mixed up” like Frasier Crane’s patients”.

And it’s not just the patients. The theme is a mixed up, mouse painting, moon howling kinda song. For a tune that only lasts 36 seconds this really packs in a lot of different notes. My advice is to throw yourself into it an not worry much about any mistakes.

Monty Python – Sit on My Face (Chords)

I thought I’d join with this week’s face sitting protests and put up the chords to this Monty Python protest song. The song is based on Gracie Fields’s Sing As We Go with some lyrical adaptation by Eric Idle.

Suggested Strumming

The main strum I use for this is just:

d – d u

I use that everywhere except in the descending intro/outro line. There I just done one downstrum per chord. Here’s how it sounds together:

Carrie Hope Fletcher – Somewhere Only We Know (Chords)

When I mentioned I was doing this song to Uke Hunt’s US Cultural Affairs Correspondent her reaction was, “Somewhere Only We Know?! Isn’t it several years too late for that song?” So I feel I should explain. Last year Lily Allen did a cover for a Christmas advert. The ad was everywhere, the song was everywhere, it went to number 1. I thought that was the end of it but it’s been cropping up again this year as Christmas song even though there’s nothing particularly Christmassy about it (other than containing a Jesus4 chord). But it’s a nice song so I’m not complaining.

I’ve written up the chords for Carrie Hope Fletcher’s version. Partly because it’s dead easy and a great place to start if you’re looking to get into fingerpicking. And partly because that makes this the first time I’ve featured separate a brother and sister ukulele songs.

To play along with the video tune up by one fret or put a capo on the first fret.

Picking Pattern

The picking is a thumb and two finger pattern. The full pattern goes like this:

Thumb picks C
Index picks E
Middle picks A
Thumb picks C
Index picks E
Middle picks A
Thumb picks C
Index picks E

So you go up the top three strings in order twice, then just the C- and E-strings. Do that once for every chord.

Here’s how it looks slow then up to speed:

And here it is in tab form:

Matt Kresling – Year of the Dog (Tab)

The travelogue of Matt Kresling and his ukulele’s circuitous trip to Madagascar is my favourite series on YouTube. Whenever a new episode crops up it’s a little treat. And there was a new one this week so it seems like the perfect time to put up my take on the show’s theme tune Year of the Dog.

The picking is all thumb and two finger style. I think Matt uses D-tuning for his version. But I’ve just gone with C-tuning.

If you’re looking for a travel doc to watch over the holidays I highly recommend it. Here’s the series trailer:

When I got my first ukulele, I was completely clueless. This was in those dark, long forgotten days before the internet had been discovered. I didn’t even realise that the strings weren’t supposed to go thickest to thinnest and restrung it.

But you can save yourself from the social disgrace I experienced. I’ve put together a free mini-ebook covering the basics that every first time uke owner needs to know. Here’s what it contains:

Asylum Street Spankers – It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie (Chords)

It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie by Billy Mayhew is a big ukulele favourite so there are a ton of versions around. I the Asylum Street Spankers’ version because it’s a real education in chord inversions. You’re going to have to be on the ball to keep up.

Christina Marrs is using D-tuning for this but I’ve stuck with C-tuning (using similar chord shapes). That means it’s played high up the neck so pay attention to the fret numbers in the chord charts.

Easy Chords

It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie (Easy Chords)

Here’s a much simpler version of the chords. It’s in the same key so mix and match between them as you see fit.

I recommend starting by learning the simple version then gradually adding in elements you like from the difficult version.

Also, take a look at the Ukulele Boudoir version which is in the same key and take elements of that you enjoy.

Suggested Strumming

Other than the one-strum-per-chord into this should get you most of the way through:

d – d – d u d u

eBook Changes and 50% Discount

2015 started off with a fair amount of upheaval over here. A new batch of EU VAT rules (over here VAT means sales tax, troosers means pants, collywobbles is a three legged dog and peaky blinders are the things horses wear on their eyes) came into effect for digital products. And governments didn’t bother telling anyone smaller than a giant megacorp (I, like most single person businesses, found out via social media near the end of December).

Long story short: before VAT was charged at the selling country rate. I’m in the UK and comfortably below the threshold so never had to charge any. The new law means I have to charge VAT at different rates in every EU country I sell in, collect location information on every one and keep it for 10 years. Which is way more of an admin burden than I can manage.

So my How to Play Ukulele ebooks were off sale in January while I found a new seller and had the site rejiggered. And, unfortunately, the ebooks are still unavailable in EU countries other than the UK until I can find a good alternative.

But it’s not all bad news. I’ve moved sales onto Gumroad. They’re a great service and there are some big advantages of using them. No more PayPal and more mobile friendly downloads.

50% Discount & Price Drops

I’ve sold a few ebooks via Gumroad already and it’s gone very smoothly. But since the system is still bedding in if you buy before Sunday 8th February you can get 50% off any of the ebooks using this code:

UPDATE: Sorry, this offer has expired.

If you do have any problems ordering just shoot me an email at ukulelehunt@gmail.com

Also, there’s a new ebook multipack: the Soloing Multipack which contains How to Play Blues Ukulele and How to Play Slide Ukulele. Usually it’ll be $19 for the pair but I’m starting it at $17 (the price of the blues ebook alone). So with the discount code you can get both for $8.50.

I’ve also dropped the price of How to Play Classical Ukulele from $9 to $7.

The Good Stuff

No More PayPal

PayPal is very useful. But sometimes it can be a right pain in the arse (most notably a long-running inability for PayPal UK to get along with Amex). I’ve heard from a few people who have trouble with it or just don’t want to use it. And I completely sympathise with that opinion.

Gumroad just uses credit/debit cards. It’s all handled by Gumroad who are super safe payments and fully compliant. I never get to see any of your credit card info. So you don’t have to worry about me using your card to fund my plans to launch a line of ukulele-themed perfumes.

More Mobile-Friendly Downloads

I launched my first ebooks back in November 2007. Back then there was no iPad, no Android and the internet was in black and white. Nowadays many people are using the ebooks on their mobile devices. And Gumroad makes it much easier to do that than the old seller did.

Now you’ll be able to download all the PDFs and tabs straight to a mobile device and open it in your favourite ebook reader (e.g. iBooks, Kindle).

The only files you won’t be able to download to your mobile device (without an app that can handle zip files) are any audio examples accompanying the ebooks. Those you’ll still need to download to a computer and transfer if needs be.

The Bad Stuff

No Sales to EU outside the UK

Because of the VAT rules I’ve had to exclude buyers from EU countries other than the UK. But I am looking into ways of making them available in the near future.
